Why Should You Increase Your Visitor Engagement? (and How Do You Do That?)

June 18, 2008 by Gina Gaudio-Graves

There’s a new wave in marketing that is about to EXPLODE! It’s a way to keep your visitors on your site longer … a way to make your visitors more likely to buy your products … and a way to get your visitors to become loyal to you!

Check it out now at:

It’s been a crazy day! We just pulled into Bossier City, LA (just outside of Shreveport) for some badly needed rest before we continue on our way to Las Vegas for Carl Galletti’s event this weekend.

We’re running late (as usual!), but will definitely be there before the event is completely over! Most likely we’ll arrive on Friday night or early Saturday.

While in Bossier City, though, we’re less than an hour from my friend, Morgan Westerman, so he’s on his way over to have dinner with us.

He’ll probably spend the better part of the evening with us, hanging out, popping into the casino (we’re in the Diamond Jack’s campground), and talking marketing.

When he gets here, I’m sure he’ll let me pick the place for dinner, and let me decide what we’ll do afterwards.

And he’ll probably stay as long as I ask him too.

Wouldn’t it be great if it was just as easy to get visitors to your website to stick around?

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could show anything you wanted to your website visitors (just like my deciding which restaurant I want to take Morgan to) and not have to worry that they would click off to some other site?

I mean, I’m not at all worried that Morgan is going to skip off to some other restaurant in the resort if we see one. He’s here to see ME!

Wouldn’t you love it if your website visitors felt the same way?

Well, I just downloaded a really cool little application that will allow you to do just that!

Basically, what it does is it opens a new window in front of your site, leaving the background of your page still visible.

The visitor is then free to browse the new window, and do anything that they want while there. But — at some point, they’re going to close that window and when they do, they’ll be right back on your site again!

These days, one of the metrics that the big companies are most often concerned about is “engagement”.

“Engagement” is a measure of how long a visitor stays on your website, how many pages he views while there, and other elements that tell you how “engaged” the person is while at your site.

Big companies like Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot are studying their visitor engagement levels because they KNOW that having more engaged visitors, means more sales.

Have you looked at your engagement metrics at all?

If you haven’t, you need to start!

A typical blog sees only 1 to 2 page views per visitor. My blog gets an average of 5 to 6 page views per visitor.

This does NOT happen by accident!

You’ve got to set things up on your site so that they maximize a visitor’s engagement!

You’ve got to implement little techniques that can help improve the number of page views per visitor, the amount of time someone spends on your site, and how likely a person will be to opt into your list or buy your product.

Do not leave these things to chance! It doesn’t work that way!

One of the ways that you can increase a reader’s level of engagement is to implement a small script called “Awesome Link Effects”. It lets you do some amazing things that you just can’t do in straight html or php.

This little $5 script will help to DRASTICALLY increase the engagement of your visitors.

If your site is anything like Walmart’s, Lowes’ or Home Depot’s, increasing a visitor’s engagement by only 10% to 15% can more than double sales!

Imagine — investing only $5 and getting a return on that investment of DOUBLE your existing sales!

Shhhh … nobody had better tell the people over at Walmart, Lowes, or Home Depot about this or they’ll surely have it up and running by midnight!

Since it’s so new and few people have yet to see links of this type, it’s bound to be even more effective!

I’m working on getting it implemented into my sites right now. When will you be adding it to yours?

I can’t remember the last time that I got so many ideas from just a little $5 script!

Awesome Link Effects can let you do SO many things on your website that you wouldn’t otherwise dare try or you’d risk sending your visitor off to another site, never to return. Now you’ve got a way to keep them HOOKED to you for as long as you’d like! How much more can you make when they stay there?

    Hi Gina!!

Thank you very much for this great tool!!! :-)
I’ll try to set it up in my wp-blog, too. It’s really great to have a way that visitors stay actually on my site although they are visting others (I send them to..) way cool!!!
And I’ll try if I can combine this also with clicking on an image… I’ll post my results @ the forum!!! :-)
But you gotta have some patience with me as for this week-end I’m at an intense seminar, which is called “Gedankendoping” which is Minddoping and it comes from Australia – maybe you’ve heard of Eugen Simon!?

    Have a great week-end and thanks again – 3,30€ very well spend!!! :-) )

From what I have been hearing google is going to be ranking sites based on user activity so your going to want people staying on your site to prove to google that your site is about what it claims from what people are typing into the search engines. nice post here

IF the visitor sticks around for at least thirty seconds than that is decent but if the bounce rate is like eighty percent than you might need to do some changing.

Gina, You and your blog have the ability to let your visitors stay longer than usual. I visit many blogs a day and many of them have ability to do the same with me but your blog is even better. I like the concept which you have explained in your article. It is beyond my exception.

i don’t really see the value of that tool you mention. it just seems like a delay tactic to me. they are probably not going to stick around after closing that window unless it reminded them of something that your site has to offer.

  14. Phil from emini trading on Mon, 1st Jun 2009 2:09 pm

I’ve found that if you laser target your search traffic they tend to stay longer which is a no-brainer. However, a tool like this could help conversions with highly targeted traffic since they are already interested in the subject anyway.

Excellent info on another tool for webmasters and bloggers.
