Yesterday was my Dad’s 68th birthday. Since I happen to be only a few hours away (something that happens only once or twice a year), we decided to pay him a surprise visit and spend the day with him.
It’s always great when you get the opportunity to spend time with family and friends … especially when it’s unexpected.
Ordinarily, whenever I’m at home, one thing I always look forward to doing is visiting my parents’ neighbors, Sid and Janet. They are some of the best people I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. They’re the kind of people that you can really learn a lot from too.
Sid and Janet met later in life, after they both had already started their careers as CPA’s. Because of their age, though, they were never able to have children.
Instead, they spent their married life together, but alone, working hard in their accounting jobs and making plans for what they would do when they retired at age 65.
They worked hard and it paid off. Both of them were fortunate enough to have high powered jobs with very large, prestigious firms. And, they were compensated REALLY well for their efforts.
They could therefore afford all the finer things in life. Things like the newest video equipment (Sid’s passion is movies of all types and he owns a collection of DVD’s that includes EVERY movie ever put onto a DVD), any kind of electronics, tons of adult “toys”, and a Snoopy collection that would amaze even Walt Disney!
Not having children to spoil and always having big hearts, Sid and Janet regularly contributed to a variety of charities and institutions. One of their favorites was Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago.
They knew that by endowing Rush’s Hospital, that in their later years they would have great doctors to take care of their health.
But that was not to be the case, for the universe had a much different scenario in mind for them …
Although they had great jobs and they could afford just about any luxury they wanted, there was one thing that they just couldn’t buy … good health.
By the time Sid was in his late 40’s, he had been diagnosed with diabetes. Shortly thereafter, he began having kidney issues and eventually heart issues as well. It seemed his body produced an excess of cholesterol and no matter what medication he tried, none of it worked.
Many open heart surgeries later, and too many heart attacks to remember, at the young age of only around 58, he passed away in his sleep 4 short years ago.
During his last few years, Janet’s health failed her too. A car accident caused severe back injuries and required several back surgeries to treat. But her back was never the same.
Her knees were also injured and even a total knee replacement wouldn’t allow her to live a pain free life.
When Sid passed away so unexpectedly, at such a young age, she was left totally alone.
All their plans for traveling the globe and seeing the world were left unfulfilled. Their plans of cruising to Alaska, seeing the Middle East (Sid was Persian), or taking a cruise around the world, were all she had left to take comfort in. But she couldn’t bear the idea of taking these trips alone.
On this trip to my parents, I asked as usual how Janet was holding up, wondering if she had finally found peace and happiness in her life and if she was still as lonely as she had been when I last saw her. The response my Dad gave me was shocking …
Janet learned last week that she is suffering from Stage 2 Breast Cancer. She’s facing extensive treatment and surgery, and there’s only a slim chance that she will recover or even survive.
I was shocked by the news and it really set me to thinking …
With all their blessings of great careers, great companies to work for, high paying jobs that they loved, a soul mate to spend life with, and any luxury they chose to allow themselves, where did it get them?
With all of their high hopes, aspirations, and dreams, was working so hard for so long worth it in the end when both of them would not even live long enough to achieve any of their goals?
When neither of them would survive long enough to enjoy the fruits of their labors?
In other words …
Was making all that money really worth it in the end when they didn’t even have the time to enjoy it?
I vividly remember holidays when the two of them would talk about what they would do when they were 65 and could retire. Why didn’t they take the time to do some of those things then? When they were still alive and able to do them?
These are questions that I ask myself time and time again as I meet people in campgrounds across the country who are in their 70’s and 80’s and for the first time in their lives, they are taking the time to do the things they always wanted to do. And every one of them are finding that their bodies are just too old and tired to enjoy any of it!
It makes me feel SO BLESSED to have learned my lesson early in life, and only the age of 40 … The lesson of how important it is to live the life of your dreams NOW and not wait for later. Later may just never come!
That’s why Bill and I live our lives as full time RVers, traveling the country whenever and wherever we choose.
That’s why I feel so grateful to have a business that allows me to do just that. One that can be operated from anywhere and with outsourcing, requires only a limited amount of time (provided I don’t allow myself to become a slave to it!).
The lesson that I had to learn was this …
You don’t HAVE to have millions of dollars to be able to live the life of your dreams.
You don’t really need to have any substantial money at all.
What you need is minimal, really. You need only to have:
* A clearly defined set of goals and dreams.
* A way to make money any time, from anywhere.
* Enough money to be able to live for a few months without worrying about making more of it.
That’s it! That’s all you need! With just these 3 little things ANYONE can live the life of their dreams. It’s simply a matter of CHOOSING to do so NOW rather than later!
It’s a matter of realizing that everything in life is a PRIVILEGE.
As my grandmother used to say, “There are only 2 things in life that you HAVE to do — pay taxes and die.”
Everything else in life is a PRIVILEGE. But you need to treat everything else in this way in order to make it valuable in your life.
When you truly see that everything you get to do in life is a privilege, you’ll start doing things MUCH differently. You’ll start valuing things differently.
And most importantly, you’ll start putting more emphasis on doing those things that really matter most
to YOU.
What’s important to me may not be important to you. We each are able to prioritize our goals in our own way.
All it takes to be able to live the life of YOUR dreams is having those 3 little things in your own life …
#1 — A clearly defined set of goals and dreams.
#2 — A way to make money any time, from anywhere.
#3 — Enough money to be able to live for a few months without worrying about making more of it.
Without these 3 things, though, you’re able to live your life like Sid and Janet lived theirs. Even if you are fortunate enough to have a great job, and make a great salary, you’re not likely to be able to have the time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
If you don’t take action on getting these 3 small things NOW, you’re likely to find yourself putting off living the life of your dreams until it’s too late.
If you wait to start down the path to getting these 3 small things, you’re likely to be too sick or too old or too feeble to enjoy them when (and IF) you do finally get them.
Before you know it, you’ll be looking death in the face and you’ll be wondering why you never did the things that really mattered most to you.
Or worse yet, you’ll be like Janet, sitting there alone wondering why you didn’t do more while your soul mate was still with you, and then still not have enough insight to actually do things differently while you still can because you’re paralyzed from being alone.
So what can you do to get these 3 little things in your life NOW, so that you can live the life of your dreams before it’s too late?
All it takes is a little bit of knowledge and a PLAN!

When you truly can recognize this right as a PRIVILEGE, you’ll begin to see how fortunate you really are to have it in the first place.
That’s when you’ll finally be able to TAKE ACTION and exercise your privilege to it’s fullest extent!
You’ll no longer take having a business for granted.
You’ll finally actually do something that will make a difference in your business so that it can finally be successful and profitable!
