I know I’ve been a bit quiet the last few days. I decided to take a short, impromptu vacation.
Before I tell you WHY I would decide to take an impromptu vacation, let me tell you what we’ve been up to the last few days …
The last time I wrote you, we were just leaving Burlington, VT en route to Las Vegas, NV.
We don’t have to be in Vegas until JV Alert Live kicks off from October 17th through October 19th. (If you’re able to join us, you’ll find all the details at: http://www.askggg.com/jvalert )
For the first time in the 4 years that we’ve been on the road, we FINALLY don’t have a super tight travel schedule! We can actually have a leisurely drive this trip and take our time getting to where we’re going.
That’s what got me to thinking …
As we left Burlington, VT we traveled south along Lakes Champlain and George, through the Adirondack mountains. We’d never been through this part of the country before and the views were simply breathtaking!
As we turned onto 90 traveling west through upper New York, I reviewed the GPS to see if we had any other mountains along our route. I couldn’t believe just how many really awesome places we’d be passing near or through! Places like …
* NIAGRA FALLS …
I haven’t seen the falls since I was 6 years old. My husband hasn’t ever been there. When I saw that our best friends, Doug and Teri Champigny, lived less than 15 minute from the Falls, I knew we couldn’t pass this stop up without saying hello!
* PITTSBURGH, PA …
Ok, maybe this might not sound like a place to see, but let me tell you, there’s some really cool stuff in Pittsburgh! And some great people, too, including our friend Mike Steup.
* CLEVELAND, OH …
Home to all of my cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family. Maybe we can pay them an unexpected visit?
* NOTRE DAME, IN …
Not only my alma mater, but my favorite college football team as well! (My inlaws live only minutes away from the stadium too!) I had to wonder if there was some way we could arrange to be driving through on a home game day.
* MOUNT RUSHMORE, SD …
Ok, so this one isn’t directly on the route, but it’s only a few hundred miles out of the way. We’ve never been to this part of the country so we’ve never seen Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, or any of the myriad of other attractions and destinations. Maybe we should take the detour and spend the day?
I can go on and on with the hundreds of other places I saw along our route, but I’ll save them for my next email to you, so I can get to the point of why I’m telling you about all of this …
As I plotted the course and dreamed of the destinations, I was struck by one single thought … I remembered WHY we set out in our RV almost 4 short years ago.
… Back then I had only months to live.
… Back then I vowed to live each day as if it were my last and to make every second count.
… Back then, my primary goal in life was to spend as much time as I could creating as many memories as possible with the love of my life, with whatever short amount of time we had left together.
WHAT CHANGED?
Why is it that these days we almost never take the time to see any sights along our trips?
Why is it that today we almost never plan on going somewhere just because we haven’t been there before?
Why is it that today life seems to be nothing more than a Google Calendar filled with appointments and more work?
How easy it is to FORGET the things that are most important in our lives!
How easy it is to get side tracked from your life’s true purpose!
How easy it is to let yourself get so wrapped up in all of life’s distractions that you forget WHY you are doing all those things in the first place!
As I came to these realizations for myself, I also had one big AH HA moment as I concluded that …
