3 HUGE Mistakes Made By Online Marketers

Are you ready for Step 2 of the 30-Day Challenge?
I just posted “Step 2 – Choosing Your Target Market” on my blog. Before you rush right over and read it, I have a few words of wisdom that I want to give you here.
I intentionally saved this advice for this article because it is SO important! I wanted to make sure that you didn’t miss it buried among the 27 pages of info in Step 2’s lesson.
What I wanted to share with you today are 3 HUGE Mistakes that are made over and over again by people building their businesses online.
The 3 mistakes people most often make are:
MISTAKE #1 — GOING INTO THE INTERNET MARKETING NICHE
WHEN YOU HAVE NEVER SOLD A THING ONLINE

In planning your business, do NOT just jump into the internet marketing niche, selling to other internet marketers, because you think that’s how other “gurus” are getting rich.
There’s a HUGE problem with getting into the IM niche, or any other “make money” niche for that matter.
You see, there’s a big catch-22 that exists when you try to sell any products at all in what I call the “make m’oney niche”. Those are products that have anything to do with internet marketing, building a home based business, or network marketing.
The catch-22 goes like this:
In order to be successful in any other market, you need to first be seen as a credible expert by your prospective customers.
The way that you do that is to put yourself out as an expert through your blog, through your newsletter, through info products, social networking, etc.
Now, here’s where the catch-22 comes in with the “make money” markets …
In the “make money markets”, it’s tough to become a credible expert until you’ve had some success online.
On the other hand, without that credibility, you can’t become successful in the first place.
So you keep going in circles, never actually seeing much success.
How can you break that circle?
You need to find a market that you can enter as an expert without needing to have success online first.
That’s why you often hear me (and other gurus as well) telling you to get into a niche that you are passionate about.
When you have a passion, you usually have enough experience to at least talk like an expert in your blog and your newsletter.
So when we tell you to “follow your passion” what we really mean is to find a topic that you can talk like an expert on.
If there is a topic that you can speak like an expert about, but you are not passionate about the topic, even that might still work. It’s most certainly a LOT better than going into a “make money” market where you have no credibility because of your lack of experience and success.
MISTAKE #2 — NOT MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE ARE BUYING WHAT IT IS THAT YOU ARE SELLING

In order to be successful online, you must first do your research and determine what it is that people are already BUYING.
Now be careful here … you don’t want to go into a market just because people are searching for the topic online. That isn’t enough to ensure that people will actually BUY what you want to sell.
Instead, you must make sure that people are really spending money on what it is that you want to sell.
This is the topic of the lesson in “Step 2 – Choosing Your Target Market”.
Once you know what people are really BUYING, then and ONLY then, should you be going out to find products to sell to your market!
You do NOT start with the product first!
That’s one of the biggest mistakes I see people making over and over again online, especially in the “make money” markets. Marketers decide to sell some cool product and only after no sales come in do they realize that the product was only cool to them.
MISTAKE #3 — KEYWORD RESEARCH IS NOT ENOUGH TO ENSURE YOUR SUCCESS!

Another huge mistake that I see all the time is that people don’t realize that for every type of product on the internet, there are 2 possible things that people are buying:
1) They could be buying the product, OR
2) They could be spending money researching products
Most gurus out there tell you to go and do keyword research to determine what niche to go into and what products to sell.
But, when you do keyword research alone, all you learn is that people are SEARCHING for that topic. You still have no clue whether or not they are BUYING that product!
If your research doesn’t break things down to show you how much is being spent researching vs. how much is being spent buying, keep looking! erhaps checking a few forums could be helpful as well.
But do NOT just go out and try to sell the product any way!
Once you have found a topic that people are really, truly spending m’oney online researching, you can either create your own Info Product and sell it, or have one ghostwritten for you, or find a product with either Private Label Rights or Public Domain Rights and modify it so that it is your own.
You can then use that info product to sell ANYTHING else that you want … wedding dresses, golf clubs, swim suits, etc.
This is where things get really interesting …
Remember in the lesson for Step 1, I said you want to become an instant expert in your niche?
Well, as an expert who sells an Info Product, inside of that Info Product, people will expect you to recommend the right products and the best producuts to them.
This is your golden opportunity to rake in TONS more cash than you made on sales of the info product itself!
Inside of the Info Product that you sell, you can (and should) actually tell your readers what they should be buying!
Use your affiliate links to do that. Use links to your other products. You can even use links to your network marketing products.
Your reader has already purchased from you once. Your reader purchased your info product.
Your reader is likely to purchase from you again! Just give him the opportunity to do so!
This is how you build a business online instead of a hobby.
This is how the big boys have made mil’lions and it’s exactly how you can pr’ofit too!
